In 1989 Derek was chosen to be an exchange student by the Bermuda chapter of the Rotary Youth Exchange program. He spent a year in Chile, South America studying, working and experiencing the Chilean culture.
After completing the Territorial Army Commissioning Course at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in 1999, Derek earned a Queen's Commission in the Bermuda Regiment. He has reached the rank of Captain and has served as Aide De Camp to the Governor of Bermuda, His Excellency Sir John Vereker, KCB, from September 2002 – September 2004.
Derek is an avid sportsman having represented his country in both basketball and rugby. He has played rugby professionally in the UK but more recently has played for and captained both the West Indies Rugby XV's and 7's teams while still captaining Bermuda's Rugby XV's and 7's teams.
